The benefits of laughter

FOURIRE

‘The reason it is so pleasant to hear children laughing is that their laughter expresses life and love. Children continually have currents of energy moving through them, contributing to their physical, emotional and mental development. Their whole being is full of energy, and their laughter is an explosion of life.

Laughter is an explosion of life in adults too. When you laugh, the energies you have accumulated burst out, overflow, and you need to share something with others.

Each time you feel life intensifying within you, you experience the wish to meet up with your friends, to make new acquaintances, because you have something to give. The excess life inside you asks to be poured out somewhere, and joyful, friendly laughter is often the expression of the need to communicate this life. ’              Daily Meditations May 11, 2015.

‘Have all the beneficial effects of laughter been studied? It maintains inner flexibility. It lightens us and encourages us to make progress. It also makes us more loving. Those who are able to laugh are also more loving than others. And they learn better and faster than others. ’

‘Laughter is not necessarily synonymous with superficiality, carelessness or a lack of seriousness, and it can even have a more beneficial effect on the mind than the grave expression which some think characteristic of sages. For laughter contains lively energies that nourish the brain.

Events occur in every person’s life that don’t at first lend themselves to laughter, it’s true. We have to admit this, and it is normal to be distressed or saddened at first. But if you get into the habit of seeing the funny side of certain situations that confront you, it is easier not to be overwhelmed. Never deprive yourself of laughter; it is a powerful tool for maintaining inner balance and making life lighter. Besides, you must have observed the fact that where difficulties and incidents affected you at first, later, when you think about them again or have to speak of them, you mainly see their funny side. ’

The Laughter of a Sage

ROC240

‘There are differences between cheerfulness and joy. Cheerfulness can be read immediately on a smiling face- there is a lightness about it. Joy comes from deeper realms. You can suffer and at the same time feel joy, because you sense that through your suffering you are understanding something important. Obviously this deep joy can also be expressed as cheerfulness. This is why you will notice that many wise people are cheerful. Their understanding lightens life’s burdens. Contrary to what many imagine, sages are neither sad nor pessimistic. They are cheerful, and even in the midst of suffering and hardships they are able to laugh. ’ Daily Meditations March 25, 2014.
